NAWCC FIELD SUITCASE WORKSHOPS

What is a suitcase workshop?

Suitcase workshops are clock repair courses held in your chapter area. These workshops were created to encourage members, who do not need or have access to the School of Horology in Columbia, Pa., to maintain and upgrade their clock collection by providing technical repair and restoration training at an affordable cost.

How are Field Suitcase Workshops organized?

The local chapters in the 48 contiguous states and Canada are responsible for organizing and sponsoring their members for a Field Suitcase Workshop.  Chapters typically assign their president or a coordinator the task of finding members interested in taking a class, collecting the tuition, locating an appropriate classroom, and scheduling the class with the Field Suitcase Workshop Administrator (FSWA. However, anyone willing to organize a class can be a coordinator. There is a class size requirement of seven to nine students for each class.  The FSWA locates an available instructor and confirms the date.

After the FSWA receives the class tuition, each student and the chapter coordinator are mailed a course outline, student tool list, reading material, and parts vendor list. The instructor will travel to the chapter site to conduct the course at NAWCC expense.  If there is a classroom rental cost, the sponsoring chapter or entity is responsible for that cost.  Students receive a course certificate signed by the NAWCC President and the instructor. Coordinators that organize class(es) are recognized yearly with a Certificate of Appreciation.

What courses are available?

Who teaches Field Suitcase Workshops?

The NAWCC has invested in the training and certification of each Field Suitcase Workshop instructor.  They have years of repair experience and training related to these field courses, and all teach from the same course material.

Instructors travel with a tool kit containing common class tools such as an ultrasonic cleaner, a lathe, a bushing tool, spring winder, depthing tool, and many other tools not required of the student but which are available for the student to use under the supervision of the instructor.
