July 4 One-Day Workshops

Space is limited; reserve early!

These workshops start at 8 a.m., Thursday, July 4 (before the mart opens). Students who have tables will be able to set up later on Thursday. Classes are limited to 10 or 12 students.

Introduction to Hand Engraving
$40 plus $10 for materials.
Learn to shape and sharpen gravers, layout and practice engraving Roman numerals on a copper plate. Demonstrations on scroll design, construction, and shading. Instructor Tira Mitchell will also demonstrate power engraving in mart.

Servicing a Pocket Watch
$40 plus $10 for materials.
Disassemble, assemble, and lubricate your own movement. Basic theory and nomenclature will be taught. Students may bring an additional pocket watch for evaluation. Tools will be supplied as needed; contact Phil for info. Instructor TBD.

Gold Leafing
$40 plus $30 for materials.
Each student will receive sufficient gold leaf to complete a fine-quality 6x8 gold border and engrave a 3x4 gold design typical of those done using gold foil. Gold application will be with a traditional water medium like that used on clocks. Instructor TBD.

Reverse Glass Painting
$40 plus $10 for materials.
One framed 5x7 transfer painting or Fenn stencil painting and a second unframed 8x10 or 5x7 painting suitable for a clock will be completed. Glass-cutting demonstrations. Instructor Lee Davis.

Basic Clock Case Repair
$40 plus $10 for materials.
Students may bring a clock case or will be given a project. Students will learn about appropriate finishes for antique pieces, how to mix and tint shellac flakes, use hide glue, and make veneer and marquetry repairs. Discussion about fraudulent pieces. Instructor Jay Holloway.

Statue, Splat, and Finial Painting
$40 plus $10 for materials.
Student may bring a statue, splat, or finial of any material needing painting. One will be provided if requested in advance. The item will be painted to look like wood or cast metal, in appropriate painting style. Instructor Steve Nelson.

Basic Mold Making and Casting
$40 plus $10 for materials.
Beginners and hobbyists. 
Material technology, types of mold designs, handling of materials, release agents, casting choices, and finishing parts. One mold and cast will be made, and students may cast and paint two ornamental pieces. Instructor Phil Gregory.
