Bulletin Article Guidelines
Articles written by members about their horological interests are always welcome!
Manuscripts should be double-spaced and submitted via USPS, electronic media, or email. Preferred formats are MS Word, .rtf, or .txt files. No particular length is required, but the topic should be horologically relevant, the writing concise, and the length suitable to the subject. Work should be reviewed by the author for correct spelling of proper names and date accuracy. Articles are peer-reviewed, and comments and suggestions from the reviewer and the editor will be sent to the author.
Photographs must be clear and may be either black-and-white or color, optical or digital. The subject should be either horizontally or vertically positioned. Centered, straight-on shots are preferred. If you use a flash, direct it away from the subject to avoid glare; moving a few inches left or right of center also will eliminate glare. Along with watch and clock dial photographs we strongly encourage photos showing movements.
Digital photography must be of a resolution high enough to guarantee at least 300 dpi at 100 percent scale. Check your digital camera specs to ensure that the output will be satisfactory.
Color photographs are always needed for Watch & Clock Bulletin covers. If you can provide top-quality images or prints of exceptional timepieces, send them for consideration. For publishing purposes the background in the picture is critical; neutral tones work best.
Illustrations that contain identification labels, numbers, and letters require special attention. If an illustration needs labeling, the untouched original illustration should be photocopied and the labeling drawn on that photocopy. Please provide us with both the original and the marked photocopy.
Line drawings should be clear, neat pen and ink drawings. We can insert any necessary labeling.
Captions should be descriptive and concise. They should briefly repeat or complement descriptive material in the body of the article. Photo and illustration credits are necessary if not the author’s.
We prefer to place the credits for photographs and illustrations vertically along the sides of the illustrations. The author’s acknowledgments and bibliography are placed at the end of the article.
Notes and references supplement the text, either at the bottom of appropriate pages or at the end of the article. When appropriate, try to incorporate the information into the body of the text. References or a bibliography are placed at the end of the article. We use guidelines from The Chicago Manual of Style to list references and bibliographies.
If you use the resources of the National Watch and Clock Museum® and Library and Research Center, please include these references in the acknowledgment of your sources.
Once the article has been reviewed, edited, and prepared in page form, the pages are sent to the author for final approval. Upon receipt of the pages from the author, the article is scheduled for publication.
Please include a short “About the Author” paragraph about yourself, your horological interests, and how you developed an interest in the topic you wrote about.
