 Introduction to Clocks

This course will introduce students to the fundamental knowledge, skills and practices needed for successful clock repair. We will began our study by working with a typical American 8 day time and strike movement similar to those found in kitchen clocks, black mantel clocks and humpback clocks.  We will study both theoretical and practical issues the student must master to become a proficient and conscientious clockmaker. Upon completing the course the student should be able to:

·         Name and identify the parts of a clock

·         Document the condition of the clock before it is disassembled

·         Remove the movement from its case and completely disassemble it.

·         Identify needed repairs

·         Safely service both open mainsprings and those in barrels

·         Assemble and synchronize the movement.

·         Adjust both countwheel and rack and snail strike trains for correct striking

·         Calculate the number of teeth for missing wheels and pinions

·         Calculate pendulum lengths and frequency

Tools Student Required to Bring:

THE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SUPPLYING A SUITABLE MOVEMENT OR COMPLETE CLOCK FOR THIS CLASS. Suggested movements are those made by Seth Thomas, Sessions, Gilbert, New Haven, or Waterbury. Please contact the instructor with any questions.

The workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology on Monday-Friday (half day on Friday), between the hours of 8:30 and 5:00. Those students wishing to stay Friday afternoon may use the time to practice skills learned during the course. This includes 1 hour for lunch each day.
