The Magic of Mystery Clocks
May 2014 - December 2014

Who doesn’t like a little magic? Clockmakers are no different and developed a style of clock commonly known as the “mystery clock.” A mystery clock is one that at first glance has no visible means of connecting a movement to the hands marking the time. These clocks are, in effect, a horological magic trick. Some of the most famous mystery clocks are believed to have been inspired and built by famous French magician and clockmaker Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. The famous illusionist Houdini is believed to have taken his stage name from the famous clock maker.
