Brass Metallurgy for Horologists

 

A comprehensive program on all aspects of brass for horologists, from corrosion to polishing to mold making to silvering. Lectures, demonstrations, power points, and most importantly hands-on learning.  Students are urged to bring in their own brass dials for restoration.

Lectures-the intermolecular structure of brass(understanding its internal composition), the process of traditional sandcasting, polishing surfaces by hand and by buffs, rolled brass vs. cast brass, corrosion –patina, surface graining, and various methods of protecting the newly polished surface, clear-coating.

-an explanation with power point of traditional foundry brass casting.

-conservation vs. restoration of brass surfaces

-Brass dial restoring-lecture-demonstration and hands–on, on student examples.

-Explanation of brass dials history, construction and typical deterioration.

-Discussion of period dial engraving, moon dials and spandrel casting.

-Discussion of Bronze Dore (mercury gilding process) typically found on English spandrels and dial components.

 Demonstrations 

-silvering of chapter rings

-black wax filling in engravings

-restoring a complete English brass dial, including disassembly, cleaning, delicate spandrel cleaning, clear coating

-mold making for the caster (sand)

-pewter spandrel mold casting

-graining a brass plate, also circular ring graining

-brass polishing on a buffing machine

-electroplating in gold (watch parts) and rhodium (instead of silver).

-electromagnetic derusting

-black polishing of steel


The workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology on Friday-Sunday between the hours of 8:00 and 4:00. This includes two 15 minute breaks and 1 hour for lunch.
