Introduction to Basic Time and Strike:

The American Kitchen Clock

This course covers the eight day, time and strike clock movement with open mainsprings, typically found in “American Kitchen” clocks. The course will concentrate on the fundamental repair procedures needed in this course and for other Field Suitcase Workshops courses. The student will learn and gain confidence with the following repair procedures:
Movement and mainspring cleaning; hand and machine bushing, pinion and wheel repair; pivot and arbor straightening; pivot polishing; time and strike train trouble shooting; recoil escapements theory and adjustments.


The student should note that only one type of clock movement can be used in this class. The clock movement that the student should bring is a
time and strike open mainspring movement sometimes referred to as an
American Kitchen Clock Movement. No other clock movement will be permitted in this class, so please concur with this request. If there are questions about the movement for this class the Coordinator or instructor should be called. No prerequisite requirement for F101

  • Component identification and operation lecture of the time and strike trains
  • Preparation for movement disassembly
  • Movement disassembly
  • Clean mainsprings
  • Clean movement by hand and with an ultrasonic cleaner
  • Instructor to identify clock parts and assemble some student’s clocks as examples
  • Student to practice assembly of the time & strike trains
  • Recondition wheels, arbors & pivots
  • Instruction for replacing bushings with tool and by hand
  • Repair click components as needed
  • Clutch mechanism as needed
  • Governor (fly) as needed
  • Condition and adjust escapement
  • Correct problems with levers and lifters
  • Final movement assembly
  • Oil movement
  • Beat adjustment
  • Using electronic timer
  • Time train trouble shooting tips
  • Strike train set-up
  • Count time train teeth & calculate time train beats per hour
