About the Cover

The images of the mid-nineteenth century clocks shown on this month's cover were buried treasure in the form of color slides in our publications department files. Dr. Jack Clemes, the original contributor and still owner of these clocks, was delighted to have us feature them on the cover.

Through the contact made asking permission to feature these images, we learned that Dr. Clemes and his wife Dr. Paine-Clemes recently established a privately funded museum in the Captain T.J.J. See House, a historic property in Vallejo, CA. Captain Thomas Jefferson Jackson See was responsible for the time bell that aided ships in synchronizing chronometers in the San Francisco Bay area. Dr. See also served as the chief astronomer for the U.S. Navy and traveled worldwide conducting astronomical research.

This museum has as part of its mission to provide access to rare and historical significant timepieces for the benefit of NAWCC members, chapters, and the public. Of the clocks on the cover, which are displayed in the Museum, Dr. Payne writes, "The three clocks...feature reverse glass paintings by Tom Moberg. Their restoration involved over seven years of research and restorative work to the cases and works."

Shown to the right is a reverse glass painting by Tom Moberg of the Captain T.J.J. See Historic Home and Clock Museum. This painting has been incorporated into a wooden works clock that is included in the clock collection of the Museum
