About the Cover

On the front cover a collage of reverse glass paintings. The example in the center with parted green curtains, from a Silas B. Terry 8-day brass weight driven "shadow box" clock, has been contained in a wooden frame attached to the inside of the backboard, preserving the painting in its 100% original state. Various experts in the field have attested to its originality.
From top left and clockwise: The inclusion of deer in the foreground makes this glass unusual. From a Mark Leavenworth and Son 30-hour short-cased fully carved wood works clock.
From a Riley Whiting 30-hour short-cased wood clock, a neoclassical hand painting (including the faux gilded border) of mother and child on a fainting couch, loosely attributed to Mrs. Funell, a painter from Toringford, CT (from p. 148 Horology Americana by Dorester and Dickstein).
"Young Napoleon" is the subject of a glass from a 30-hour time, strike and alarm wood works clock by Atkins and Down for Matthews and Payne. The glass is unique due to the heart motif inlay and carved splat with a small mirror between the scrolls. Its origin is from a Kellogg lithograph of the period.
From a Treat and Bishop miniature 30-hour weight driven wood works clock; the glass is quaint due to its childlike simplicity.
With nearly 0% loss, the next example with sailing ship is loosely attributed to Elijah Darrow or his students. From a 30-hour Charles Kirke wood works clock.
This almost too busy scene (house, trees, landscape in foreground) is nearly 100% without flaking. From a Mark Leavenworth miniature 30-hour pillar and scroll clock.
A hand painting of the New Jersey coat of arms from a Smith and Brothers 30-hour brass weight driven earl OG clock. All photos by Dr. Joseph Arvay (NJ).
