About the Cover
Both covers this month feature outstanding, rare clocks generously
lent to the National Watch and Clock Museum by an Association member for
display in the new Pillar and Scroll exhibit. Scheduled to open later
this fall, the exhibit will feature 39 pillar and scroll examples,
starting with early Eli Terry clocks and including makers from five
states.
The front cover features a clock from Ithaca, NY, ca. 1825, by Joseph
Burritt. The case, by an unknown maker, includes intricately carved
cherry and curly-maple detail with maple urn-shaped finials. The naval
scene reverse-glass painting, dial-surround glass, and dial are
original. The 8-day time and strike movement is driven with compound
weights. The clock is 38" high x 17-1/2" wide.
The back cover, left, shows a late 1830s clock by John Scharf, who
immigrated from Switzerland about 1815, eventually settling in Snyder
County, PA. This clock features a 30-hour time and strike movement, also
with compound weights. The case is mahogany veneer and bird’s-eye maple
with original turned finials. Scharf’s clocks were of good quality with
cost-cutting features, such as thin plates, in order to compete with
Connecticut makers. Movement details reflect his European background.
This clock is 32-1/2" tall x 16-1/2" wide.
The back cover, right, shows a front outside-escapement “deluxe”
model Eli Terry clock, ca. 1817, with a 30-hour wooden works
weight-driven movement. The case is mahogany veneer with tiger maple
trim and a pierced, fretwork-style crest. The reverse painting is an
accurate reproduction. This clock is 31" tall x 17-1/2" wide.
