Students' Stories

Bob Huguley

I spent several years searching for a new career that would allow me to start my own business and leave the pressures of the corporate world behind me.

It became apparent to me that clock and watch repair presented many opportunities, not the least of which was the possibility of starting a new business from my home.  This idea looked like a real possibility when I was surfing the net and found a school that offered the clock and watch classes I would need to pursue this new career.  After visiting the School of Horology and meeting with the director, I was convinced that this was the right profession for me.  It would require the technical expertise to troubleshoot problems and also a strong ability in working with my hands, both of which appeal to me.

I then spent the next year at my position as a database administrator for a publishing company preparing for the change.  When I registered for the Complete Horological Repair Program, I knew that a well-rounded education consisting of both clocks and watches would, in the long term, afford me a wider range of business opportunities.  I started the Watch Repair Program in December 2003 and completed it in July 2004.  After a two-week break, I then started the Clock Repair Program.  I’ve just finished the third class in the clock program with seven more to follow.

Between classes, I’ve started setting up my home shop to be ready for repair work.  I also made arrangements with a local clock and watch shop to take on some of their clock repairs as soon as my time and skills permit.  My new career appears to be right on track with plans for taking in work well before I finish the last clock class in March 2005.

I can feel the momentum and excitement building as each piece of this new puzzle falls into place and I realize that a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction comes from building and controlling your own future.  This type of change would not be possible without organizations like the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors!
