Course Descriptions


The NAWCC School of Horology continues the tradition of watch-making by offering a Watch Repair Program. This program is designed with the beginner in mind and progresses to more advanced stages and technologies. Graduate students, fully equipped with knowledge and skills in the art of watch repair, can expect to attain at least an entry level position in this field. The Watch Repair program consists of eleven courses that are offered at three-week increments (116 clock hours) per course with the exception of W-100 and W-1100 both offered at a two-week increment (80 clock hours) and W-500 which is a one week course. The Watch Repair program is nine months or thirty-nine weeks. (W-100 through W-1100.)

The School reserves the decision to waive the prerequisite for any given course if the applicant is able to demonstrate the equivalent knowledge, experience or training required by the School.

 

W-100 Micro Mechanics

This course introduces the student to the methods and practices of making small parts and projects.

Prerequisite: High school diploma, G.E.D., or higher

TWO WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM 80 HOURS

W-200 Introduction to Watch Repair

This course includes how to disassemble and assemble a watch, how to clean and oil a watch, nomenclature of watch parts, and the basic theories of gearing, escapements, motion works, and power sources.

Prerequisite: W-100

 THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-300 Horological Lathes

This course combines lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on applications to address the history of horological lathes as well as disassembly and assembly, cleaning and oiling, and operation of the major lathe attachments.

Prerequisite: W-200

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-400 Staffing & Jeweling

This class covers staffs and jewel replacement, as well as escapements.

Prerequisite: W-300

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.- 4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-500 Swiss Lever Escapement

How to properly adjust and repair the Swiss lever escapement.

Prerequisite: W-400

ONE WEEK: MONDAY-FRIDAY, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M.; 40 HOURS.

W-600 Hairsprings

A hands-on class in which all types of hairsprings are adjusted and vibrated. Hairspring calculations are covered.
Prerequisite: W-500

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.- 4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-700 Wristwatches

This class focuses on the repair of simple, calendar, and automatic watches.

Prerequisite: W-600

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.- 4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-800 Quartz Watches

The course covers battery (quartz) watch service: movement, crystals, crowns, batteries, stems, bands, bracelets, and case tubes.

Prerequisite: W-700

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.- 4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-900 Making Parts

This course covers making parts and tools for watches.

Prerequisite: W-800

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.-4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-1000 Business & Repair Problems

This course is designed to provide hands-on training in various watch repair problems. It also includes shop practices, customer relations, estimating, record keeping, and insurance presentation.

Prerequisite: W-900

THREE WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.- 4:30 P.M.; 116 HOURS.

W-1100 Chronographs

This course combines lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on application to address the history of the chronograph watch and modern chronograph servicing. The Valjoux 7750, today’s most widely-used Swiss chronograph, will be introduced in this course. This course introduces disassembly/assembly and proper servicing as well as movement adjustment. The School follows the ETA Swiss Lab training protocol in this course.

This course is the final course in the program.

Prerequisite: W-1000

TWO WEEKS: MONDAY-FRIDAY EACH WEEK, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM AND THE FIRST SATURDAY 8:00 A.M.- 4:30 P.M.; 80 HOURS.
