WS-114: How to Use a Watchmakers/Jewelers Lathe for the Beginner

Course Dates: November 15-16, 2008

Learn to turn using the watchmakers/jewelers lathe in this 2-day workshop.  Acquire a basic understanding of the methods and techniques used in working with these versatile machines.  This hands-on course will cover:

  • Nomenclature of the lathe
  • Setup and maintenance
  • Making a graver
  • Turning and filing
  • Indexing and measuring
  • How to use the tail stock
  • How to select the proper collets

Students will make tools and then use these tools to make several small projects.  By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid foundation of how to use a watchmakers/jewelers lathe. 

This is a hands-on workshop open to all who are interested.  All materials and tools will be supplied, but student's may bring their own lathes.

The workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This includes two 15-minute breaks and 1½ hours for lunch.
