Lesson Plan

WS-116: Introduction to Servicing the Platform Escapement

Course Dates: June 7-8, 2008

The platform escapement is one of the more complicated of the clock escapements.  Learn how to service these intricate mechanisms in this 2-day workshop.  Topics covered will include:

  • How the escapement works
  • Nomenclature
  • Disassembling the platform
  • Cleaning the parts
  • Re-assembling the platform
  • Lubricating the parts
  • Timing and adjusting the platform
  • Trouble shooting the escapement

This is a hands-on workshop open to all who are interested, but a basic knowledge of clock movements and the use of horological tools is helpful.  All materials and tools will be supplied, but students may bring their own clocks.

The workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This includes two 15-minute breaks and 1½ hours for lunch

For additional information contact Katie Knaub at the NAWCC School of Horology: 717-684-8261, ext. 237.
