Lesson Plan

WS-119 Wheel and Pinion Cutting on the Micro Mill

Course Dates: September 20 - 21, 2008

This 2-day workshop is a continuation of WS117.  Students will learn the technique of cutting gears and pinions using a micro mill.  Some of the topics covered will include:

  • Basic calculations of wheel and pinion cutting
  • Machining a wheel blank and arbor
  • Milling machine setup
  • Use of the rotary table
  • Making  and hardening cutting tools
  • Pinion cutting
  • Wheel cutting

This workshop is open to all, but participants must be familiar with the micro lathe. All materials, supplies, and machines will be provided.

The workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology on Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This includes two 15-minute breaks and 1½ hours for lunch.
