Introduction to Wristwatch Servicing

Introduction to Wristwatch Servicing

This is a two-and-a-half-day beginner’s workshop on the basics of mechanical wristwatches, taught by professional watchmakers in the School of Horology’s newly constructed watch studio. The workshop will begin with bench craft and tool familiarization before exploring how a watch movement functions and learning basic service procedures. Under the guidance of the instructors, each student will disassemble, clean, reassemble, lubricate, and adjust timing on a Seagull ST-36 manual wind movement. Participants will be introduced to the Greiner ACS900 cleaning machine and the Witschi Watch Expert I Timing Machine.

Participants will gain experience in the following areas:

·         Basic bench practice and techniques

·         Care and maintenance of hand tools

·         Watch component terminology

·         How a watch works

·         Lubrication technique

·         Timing and beat adjustment

Equipment & Materials: All tools and materials will be provided. Students may bring their own tools if they wish (screwdrivers, tweezers, etc.). A watchmaker eye loupe is required and will be available for those who do not have one. For students who must wear glasses, specialized loupes for glasses should be procured.
