Boot Camp-Introduction to the Table-Top Lathe & Mill

Get Ready to Make Some Chips!

Description: This course is intended for the beginner with little or no metal-cutting lathe or mill experience. This workshop has also been designed for someone who is curious or ready to move beyond hand tools and specialty repair tools. Understanding the machinist lathe and mill better will permit all users to do more extensive repairs or fabricate their own parts and tools. All participants will receive orientation on basic lathe and mill safety practices, nomenclature and standard conventions.

Discussions and demonstrations will be provided on:

– Lathe and mill components

– The concept of “Run Out” and other sources of dimensional error

– Order of operations for machine work and effect on accuracy

– Work-holding for stock and fabricated pieces

– Cutter types, geometries and applications

– Handwheel use and backlash control

– Feeds and speeds

– Materials and lubricants

– Calipers capable of measuring to 0.001” will be reviewed

Participants will then proceed with hands-on experiences with Sherline 4500 lathe and 5400 mill performing a variety of machining operations on a variety of materials (steel, brass, aluminum and plastic). Participants will complete fabrication of objects to provided designs.

Equipment & Materials: All materials and equipment will be supplied. Participants are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses (or prescription glasses with side shields), shop aprons, magnifiers (visor) and calipers (4” or 6” capable of +/- 0.001” recommended), if they have them. If not, these items will be provided for each participant.

NOTE: Machining operations can be messy, so dress accordingly. Also avoid loose clothing, jewelry, hair, etc. that can get caught in the machine.
