Foundational Clock Repair Skills II

Foundational Clock Repair Skills II

Description: The Foundational Clock Repair Skills (FCRS) II workshop reinforces the skills learned in Foundational Clock Repair Skills I: making a wheel hub, spin riveter, dome stake, pusher stake, and stump to prescribed dimensions. FCRS II will expand participants’ skills through continued lathe work; an introduction to heat treatment; mounting a wheel blank and arbor to a hub using the spin riveter and dome punch; using a jeweler’s saw; wheel and pinion engagements; using the depthing tool; and determining issues and concerns with a modern Indian-produced clock movement.

FCRS II will cover the following concepts:

  • Fabricating the parts of a wheel assembly and mounting them on an arbor, including laying out a wheel, using a fret saw for wheel crossing, and continuing to use the lathe skills taught in FCRS I
  • Removing the wheel from the arbor and remounting it
  • Making the necessary tools to accomplish the above lathe work, including polishing, hardening, and tempering steel
  • Learning the basic concepts of wheel and pinion engagement (depthing)
  • Applying a systematic approach to identifying and diagnosing problems in a time-only movement

Students will also receive a flowchart created for the workshop that highlights the general order of operations at the bench.

Tools & Equipment: Participants do not need to bring tools; however, they are invited to bring their own measurement tools (micrometers, calipers) and devices such as pivot polishers/burnishers, files, depthing tools, eye protection, and magnification devices. If the participant does not have any or all the items mentioned above, the School of Horology can supply them.
