Machinist Boot Camp: Introduction to the Tabletop Lathe

Machinist Boot Camp: Introduction to the Tabletop Lathe

Get Ready to Make Some Chips!

Description: This workshop is intended for the beginner with little or no metal-cutting lathe experience and has been designed for those who are curious or ready to move beyond hand tools and specialty repair tools. Understanding the lathe better will allow participants to undertake more extensive repairs or fabricate their own parts and tools.  All participants will receive orientation on basic machine lathe safety practices, nomenclature, and standard conventions used with machining lathes.

Discussions and demonstrations will cover the following topics:

·       Lathe components

·        “Run out” concept and other sources of dimensional error

·       Order of operations for the lathe

·       Work-holding of metal stock and fabricated pieces

·       Cutter types, geometries, and applications

·       Handwheel use and backlash control

·       Feeds and speeds

·       Materials and lubricants

·       Calipers capable of measuring to 0.001″

Participants will then proceed with hands-on experience with a Sherline 4500 miniature lathe, performing a variety of machining operations on a variety of metals (steel, brass, and aluminum).  Participants will complete fabrication of an object to a provided design.

Equipment & Materials: All materials and equipment will be supplied.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own safety glasses (or prescription glasses with side shields), shop aprons, magnifiers (visor), and calipers (4″ or 6″ capable of +/- 0.001″ recommended), if they have them. If not, these items will be provided for each participant.
