400-Day Torsion, or Anniversary Clock 1-Day Workshop
NAWCC National Convention Workshop
400-Day Torsion (Anniversary) Clock 1-Day Workshop
In an eight-hour period, students will learn how to use the Horovolar Repair Guide to gather specifications for their anniversary clock project(s). Each student will break down their project clock to the piece-parts level, including removing the dial and hands, removing the suspension spring, letting down power on mainsprings, and splitting the plates. Pivots will be hand-polished (sanding sticks and polish provided), and plate pivot holes will be pegged clean.
The movement will be reassembled and should pass a three-click mainspring test without a verge. A verge will then be installed. Students will most likely make a new suspension spring, which is often the failed component in torsion clocks. The instructor will provide each student with an assembly jig and suspension spring material, along with templates to construct a new suspension spring using the guide. Finally, students will install the new suspension spring and put the movement into beat.
Magnification
One complete standard-size anniversary clock with at least a suspension spring top block and fork. The mainspring must be strong, and the clock should have no broken internal plate parts. Students are encouraged to contact the instructor regarding project clock selection.
