Introduction to Antique Clocks

Introduction to Antique Clocks
with Ken De Lucca, NAWCC Education Director
and Sam Gradel, School of Horology Coordinator

This 2-day workshop will cover the basic functions of a time-only mechanical clock movement. All participants will disassemble and reassemble the movement several times. Participants will be introduced to the mainspring winder as well as the clock-cleaning process. The assembled movement will be lubricated and put into beat on a movement test stand. Additionally, demonstrations of pivot polishing/burnishing and a bushing machine will be given. Videos and animations will be used to supplement instruction at the workbench.

Tools and Materials: Hand tools and the movement will be provided but remain the property of the NAWCC. It is suggested that you bring your own binocular magnifier (visor) or similar device (i.e., watchmaking loupe) and safety glasses to work with mainsprings and lathes. Visors and safety glasses are available for use in the workshop if you do not have them.

Arrive a day early to enjoy the National Watch and Clock Museum!
