Introduction to Chiming Clocks and 3-Train Movements

Introduction to Chiming Clocks and 3-Train Movements

Description: This three-day workshop will focus on the modern chiming clock—the Hermle 451-050. The 451-050 is a 3-train, chain-driven movement powered by weights. It is an 8-day clock movement with the Graham deadbeat escapement. It sounds the Westminster chime on the four quarter hours and strikes the hours at 12 o’clock. The proper operation of the movement will be explained, and participants will complete a full disassembly and reassembly of a movement. Additionally, lubricating procedures will be presented, along with recommended lubricants.

Please Note: This is not a beginner’s workshop! It is very strongly recommended that all participants have already taken workshops related to time/strike movements (count wheel striking), along with rack & snail striking mechanisms. The 451-050 has many wheels contained within each of the three trains that make up the movement, and it has very small diameter pivots. Wheels and pivots can be easily damaged by the inexperienced. For this reason, potential participants should contact the instructor for approval to join this workshop. The instructor will assess the potential for success based on experience. Many people wish to begin their horological education by working on these commonly seen and used movements. However, these movements are not for beginners or those new to clockmaking!

Tools: Please bring your own binocular magnifier (visor) or similar device (watchmaker’s loupe). Magnifying visors will be provided if you do not have them. All movements, tools, and related materials will be provided for your use during the workshop and remain the property of the School of Horology.
