Rack-and-Snail Striking and an Introduction to the Tall Case Clock
Rack-and-Snail Striking and an Introduction to the Tall Case Clock
Designed for individuals with some background in clocks and their operation, this three-day workshop will cover in detail the operation of the rack-and-snail striking system. Using larger, English-style tall case clock movements to better see and understand this method of striking the hour, participants will also be introduced to the tall case, or floor, clock (also known as a grandfather clock). After a detailed review of the rack-and-snail striking method, participants will operate English-style tall case clock movements to better understand their functions and learn more about weight lines and cords; large, heavy pendulums and suspension springs; and their removal and replacement into and out of the case. Safety aspects concerning mounting a tall case clock to a supporting wall, along with safety concerns with moving large, heavy weights, will also be considered. Typical repair operations needed to return these movements to service will be included. Reading assignments will be provided for each evening of the workshop.
Tools and Materials: All tools and materials will be provided. Please bring your own safety glasses and any magnification devices (visors) you may need. Safety glasses and magnification visors will be provided if needed but remain the property of the NAWCC.
